Over the past decade, federal funding for science has trumped that of engineering by more than 80 percent. In 2011, $33 billion in funding was spent on science while only $6 billion was spent on engineering. The amount of funding given to both science and engineering programs has increased substantially over the past decade. While federal funding for science makes up the lion’s share of federal R&D spending, that share is slowly decreasing. It has fallen from 85.2 percent in 2002 to 81.9 percent in 2011.
