WASHINGTON, -  Today, The Manufacturing Institute released a new Dream It. Do It. toolkit, “VOICE: The Guide to Developing Manufacturing Ambassadors.” This toolkit provides manufacturers with everything they need to enable them to engage with their future workforce. It is a step-by-step guide for launching a company Ambassador program; a low-cost, high-impact approach to inspiring the community, improving the talent supply chain and increasing company exposure.

VOICE was the outcome of a yearlong process that included the support and input of various manufacturers. Caterpillar, Alcoa Inc., and Cooper Tire were several national manufacturers that contributed to the process, and Behlen Mfg. Co. (Columbus, Neb.), APSCO Inc. (Tulsa, Okla.), GenMet (Mequon, Wis.), and ACE Clearwater Enterprises (Torrance, Calif.) provided the perspective of smaller-sized companies.

A recent research report conducted by SkillsUSA, The Manufacturing Institute, and  the Educational Research Center of America found that 64 percent of students stated personal experiences are the greatest influencer over their future career choice.

The skills gap is all too apparent to manufacturers of all sizes. Manufacturers across the United States are facing a workforce nearing retirement and lack younger workers to fill those roles. The Manufacturing Institute developed VOICE as a strategy to empower manufacturers to reach young people and inspire the next generation of manufacturing leaders to increase the talent pool of younger workers.
