Baltimore, MD, -  Institute Vice President Gardner Carrick delivered luncheon remarks today to the United States Fab Lab Network Annual Symposium in Baltimore, MD.  Carrick discussed the resurgence of manufaturing in the U.S. and the critical role that innovation will play in the success of that resurgence.  He also reviewed President Obama's National Network for Manufacturing Innovation Institutes, looking specifically at the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute recently awarded to UI Labs in Chicago, IL and how the Fab Labs could partner to be a local access network for the Institute.

The U.S. Fab Lab Network grew out the original fab lab at the MIT Center for Bits and Atoms.  The growth was initially sponsored by the National Science Foundation but has since grown to include dozens of fab labs around the country where companies, entrepreneurs, and hobbyists can work with manufaturing equipment.
