Tampa, FL, -  Institute President, Jennifer McNelly, is attending the American Council on Education Annual Meeting - "The Industry's Leadership & Skills Summit" in Tampa, Florida. She will address the conference on March 5th.  Ted Hoff (VP of Learning and Development at IBM), Susan Suver (VP of Human Resources at US Steel Corporation), Education Leaders from Maricopa Community College and State University System of New York joined McNelly and 150 higher education leaders at the event.  McNelly said that a “robust dialogue on education partnerships” took place and emphasis was put on “true leadership and action.”  Employers on the panel stressed a need for strong academic, work-place and technical skills and individuals who can think critically and problem solve. 

Panel members agreed that to overcome the skills gap, true partnership will be the answer. Take-aways from the session included stressing the importance of:

  • The need for meaningful partnerships at the community level where education and employment happens; 
  • Utilization of industry standards to better align the disconnect; 
  • Greater flexibility in education;
  • Easy pathways for returning military
