-  Marketplace ran a story discussing the recent emergence of and national spotlight of certifications.  Employers today often look for a college degree as a minimum requirement, yet they frequently complain that the people they hire aren’t making the cut.  They do not have the right soft skills or the specific technical skills needed for the job.  The workforce needs skilled people.

Alternative credentials can be part of this solution.  They can provide employers with evidence that a candidate has the right skills at a low cost to the applicant and employer.  A new idea that has been gaining a lot of recognition is digital badges, a project developed by the MacArthur Foundation and Mozilla.  As Cathy Davidson, co-founder of HASTAC, explains, “A digital badge is something you can put on your website that basically says that you've been credentialed in a certain skill.”

In May, the Institute was selected to develop badges for veterans, SkillsUSA and Project Lead The Way.
