Last September, the American Welding Society (AWS) and the National Center for Welding Education (Weld-Ed) hosted a roundtable of nearly 80 Welding industry representatives including secondary and post-secondary educators, union representatives, policy-makers, welding suppliers and employers of welding professionals in construction, heavy equipment, shipbuilding, nuclear power and repair to discuss solutions to the looming skilled welder shortage.

Drawing on the critical issues, challenges, and potential solutions discussed during the meeting, AWS and Weld-Ed have released the Training Strategies for Developing Tomorrow’s Welding Professionals. The report explores the challenges faced by employers and educators to hire and train the right workers, build enthusiasm for careers in welding and strengthen industry and education collaborations.

Discussions like these are critical to an ongoing dialogue to lead to implementations that will keep U.S. manufacturing strong.
