“Manufacturing products that advance companies, enhance homes and improve lives is very fulfilling. Providing meaningful jobs in communities around the world while focusing on the environment, health and safety as a fundamental value provides an intense sense of pride for me. Every day we strive to improve, and it's fun!”

Valerie Young has had a 31-year career at 3M where she has become instrumental in driving business growth and operational excellence.  Val has worked in a range of progressively responsible positions across the entire corporation, and, among other accomplishments, has used Lean Six Sigma processes to engage Black and Green Belts.  As a Lean Six Sigma Director she drove projects in 12 countries to drive cost saving improvements of over $375 million. In 2014, her contributions led the corporation to a 0.5 inventory turn improvement.
Throughout all of her accomplishments, Val continues to be an exemplary leader, visibly demonstrating the six 3M Leadership Behaviors in whatever she does. She is well-respected among her peers, employees and senior leaders, and is a highly sought after ‘go-to’ for many people who value her wisdom and guidance. While she is absolutely business results driven, she always makes time for people, showing utmost respect and empowering everyone to do their best.
Val understands the significance of paying her career success forward among other women and men in our organization, as well as in our community. Over the years, Val has been an outstanding mentor to many people in 3M.  Val is active in the executive women’s team of the 3M’s Women’s Leadership Forum (WLF), sharing her global observations and encouragement for how these female role models can make a greater difference in the lives of more of our women.
Val gives generously of her time to help others both in the 3M family and in the greater community. She deeply appreciates the impact 3M makes as an employer and community leader in the towns and cities where 3M operations are based. She provides not only her time but also her ‘treasure’ in support of many worthy organizations, including serving as mentor for high school students as part of BestPrep.  In the past she has served as president of the United Way, Junior Achievement, and Chamber of Commerce.
