Michelle Piening
Regional Modine Operating System Manager
Modine Manufacturing Company
Racine, WI

“It’s imperative that the United States regain its manufacturing strength before our knowledge of the industry is lost due to lack of exposure and experience. My passion for manufacturing is to drive continuous improvement in order to regain our competitive edge and secure this crucial industry for future generations.”

Since joining the company as a manufacturing engineer in 2000, Michelle has held several technical leadership positions. In her current role, Michelle provides process improvement leadership and guidance to each of the company’s North American plants. By mentoring and coaching individuals and teams, Michelle helps grow the process improvement capability of the workforce.
Michelle has made a variety of noteworthy contributions during her career with Modine. She is a certified Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt who has led numerous process improvement initiatives at the plants, eliminating process variation, and improving the safety and efficiency of manufacturing processes.  One of her most significant achievements is the role she played in leading the company to achieve a critical supplier quality certification. During her tenure as Quality Manager at the Jefferson City facility, the plant became the first heat transfer supplier to achieve Caterpillar Supplier Quality Excellence certification. Peers on the plant management staff credit Michelle’s driven approach and her ability to inspire her teammates as key factors in obtaining this certification. Under her direction as the Quality function leader, the facility maintained this certification for seven years.
Among Michelle’s responsibilities is teaching others how to be better mentors for their teams. In this regional role, she works with individual and management teams throughout the country to develop their process improvement skillsets, and specifically improve their understanding and application of the mentoring role all leaders must play.
In addition to her full-time work at Modine, Michelle is also engaged in making a positive impact on the children in her local community, especially with two efforts:  volunteering as a youth mentor with Missouri Big Brothers / Big Sisters and participating as the Modine representative on Thomas Jefferson Middle School Partner's In Education initiative.
