Monica Silliman
Supervisor, Paint Engineering and Operations
John Deere Harvester Works

“I love the collaborative manufacturing environment. We get to work together as a team and see tangible results every day. It's challenging and dynamic, so we're always learning. We're also able to make a difference in the lives of both our team and our customers, which is very rewarding.”

Monica occupies a dual leadership role at John Deere as the head of both the manufacturing engineering team and the operations team for the Combine and Front End Equipment (FEE) paint systems. Because of her strong team building skills, the Harvester Paint team has dramatically improved the quality of paint applied in FEE through the use of data analytics, process improvements and rigorous TPM implementation. Her team recently received the Deere Enterprise Environmental Impact Award for Water thanks to their significant water reduction.

Technical leadership and communication are keys to Monica’s success. Monica actively engages cross-functional enterprise teams to drive resolutions, and is an effective leader who makes sure each of her team members grow in their current roles. As a strong advocate for the Women in Operations program, Monica has shared her experiences with numerous divisions in the John Deere enterprise. She recently served as retention co-chair for the organization and will soon assume the role of vice-chair. Also a focus group lead for Transforming Culture within the manufacturing engineering team, Monica has taken an active role in improving team engagement by facilitating group meetings, organizing customer interaction events and driving deeper conversations for improved perspective.

A longtime partner with United Way, Monica participated in community Day of Caring events and worked at the local mobile food bank. She has been highly involved with John Deere campaigns as well, including co-chairing a campaign that generated more than $400,000 in donations and 1,000 hours of volunteering. Monica is also leading an Eastern Iowa effort to expand bike trails along the Mississippi River. She has attended city council meetings and drove completion of formal grant applications aligned to Iowa DOT specifications to raise funds for the project. Her passion is clearly making a difference for the community she lives in.
