Toyota Motor Manufacturing de Guanajuato, México

“Nothing inspires me more than seeing how through our relentless pursuit of People Development, we ignite the passion of our members, who in turn improve the Safety and Quality of our products. Manufacturing environments allow us to enrich the lives of our associates and people who purchase our vehicles.”

Mercedes’ strong leadership skills and production expertise have been crucial to her role at Toyota. In her career, she launched a plant-wise visual management system at Toyota Motor Manufacturing de Baja California (TMMBC) that was used to improve efficiency and develop multiple layers of the production operation. In line with her goal of implementing “the most effective visual management system in North America,” the system has been used as a benchmark for plants in both North and South America.

To allow TMMBC to increase their output of trucks while minimizing cost, Mercedes led her team to put a comprehensive plan in place to ensure a smooth and successful outcome. Leading her team to maneuver the company through several complexities surrounding the effort, her leadership and foresight was critical to its success. Additionally, she was responsible for the development and implementation of a continuous talent review process that has been instrumental in motivating team members, minimizing learning curves and ensuring company flexibility.

Mercedes has elevated Toyota’s presence within the community. She has set a positive example of “giving back” through many efforts including leading an annual holiday toy drive and challenging team members to donate their time to help underprivileged community members from surrounding areas of the plant. She also led a scholarship program for children of team members and partnership with local schools to provide donations, school supplies and time to students to highlight the importance of education.

Recently, it was announced that Toyota will build a new manufacturing plant in Guanajuato, México and considering her experience and ability to understand and navigate through Mexican, American and Japanese cultures, Mercedes was asked to take the challenge of joining this project.

Finally, in her career at Toyota, Mercedes has pioneered the path for women in Mexican manufacturing affiliates. As the first female Manager at Toyota Motor Manufacturing de Baja California (TMMBC), and first General Manager in Toyota Motor Manufacturing de Guanajuato (TMMGT), she feels a strong responsibility to utilize her strengths as a means to gain developmental momentum for her organization.
