Cheryl English
Vice President, Government & Industry Relations
Acuity Brands, Inc.

“A career in manufacturing promotes lifelong learning. The manufacturing industry offers various opportunities to be involved in the development of leading technologies that improve the quality of life. Many technology leaders work in manufacturing to establish a bridge between research and the marketplace.”

Cheryl has worked in various technical and management positions throughout her 36-year career with Acuity Brands, which have resulted in numerous achievements for the organization. In one example of her many contributions, she developed one of the industry’s first programmable calculator lighting design tools and proceeded to create various PC-based applications for lighting design. This software is now the most widely used lighting design software in the industry and allows architects, lighting designers, and engineering specifiers to complete full lighting layouts with detailed calculations—which ultimately saves time and improves design quality.

As a result of her combined engineering and business expertise, Cheryl has led numerous products to market, managed process improvements in testing labs, helped expand the company's growth through many new applications, and represented the organization in key policy issues with the Department of Energy and other government/trade organizations.

Cheryl is considered the "go-to" leader on all issues related to government and trade association policies, codes and legislations. She has been instrumental over the past decade in the development and ongoing focus of sustainability priorities to reduce Acuity’s use of natural resources and recycling programs. In her current role as Vice President, Government & Industry Relations, Cheryl utilizes her technical expertise and management experience to advocate for the advancement of energy policy, smart buildings and integrated building solutions. She was the first woman in the company to achieve the position of Vice President within Lighting Operations, and as current President of the Illuminating Engineering Society, Cheryl is just the 5th woman in the Society’s 117-year history to lead the trade association.

As a leader, both inside and outside of Acuity, Cheryl has held many positions within trade associations and has been honored for service in her profession with several key awards. In her personal life, Cheryl lends her time to not-for-profit organizations supporting student scholarships in illumination engineering, and works with several other programs to promote lighting research and development, environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.
