Nicki has been instrumental during her short tenure in developing the company’s engineering training program for new hires. She has demonstrated her strong, collaborative leadership style and has become the go-to person for new engineering hires, as well as engineering interns. Her efforts were so successful for the Mechanical Engineering group that Nicki was approached by the Controls Engineering, Build, and Quoting groups to develop similar training.
She has also been a dedicated leader within JR's Community Outreach Team. Working together with a small group of employees, Nicki helped formalize a group to lead JR's efforts as a company in getting more involved with the local STEM community.
While attending Grand Valley State University, Nicki helped mentor the Allendale School's Lego League, a division of FIRST robotics geared toward middle school students. She has also been involved as a mentor with the Holland Christian Robotics Team since 2009. She attends their weekly meetings, working with small groups of students doing CAD work and sharing her design ideas for the team’s robot.
Nicki has been asked to speak at many conferences. For the past two years, Nicki has been a speaker at the FIRST Robotics World Championship in St. Louis, focusing on her experiences in working in a male-dominated field, and providing encouragement for other young women looking at careers in engineering and other related STEM fields.
Nicki has also been a referee for the past eight years for the FRC program. After being a referee for a couple of years, Nicki earned the title of Head Referee, the youngest and first female head referee in the state of Michigan.
