Edye S. Buchanan, CMfgT
Fives North American Combustion Inc.
“As my role model, my father showed me the importance of hard work, honesty, loyalty and respect. Through him, I learned workforce diversity, team building, and a holistic approach to problem solving, volunteerism and mentoring. He encouraged me to reach my goals, not only as a professional, but as a wife/mother.”
Edye is best-known for her hands-on, direct approach to working with manufacturing and assembly personnel. It’s this approach, her extensive knowledge of her product line and manufacturing processes, which have moved several new products from concept to production. Her technical expertise and engagement with the CAD team to standardize designs has led to an overall 30% decrease in engineering and design. The result is more accurate drawings, quicker release to manufacturing, and faster deliveries.
Edye has served as an in-house training resource, which may be a natural extension of her early professional life, as a secondary teacher. Spurred by an exposure to CAD, Edye decided to return to school and pursue a degree in mechanical design. Applying her love for teaching, she served as a mentor and teaching resource for other students in the curriculum.
Today, as one of few women in technical positions at Fives North America, Edye is in the unique position to be an advocate on attracting more women to the firm. As a charter member of the college’s student chapter of SME, Edye initiated the Lego Olympiad, which has become an annual event drawing more than 500 students each year. She continues to serve today as a mentor, judge, and speaker as her schedule allows. Her involvement in SME continues and she has served in a range of local, regional, and national offices, advising, educating, planning and training. She currently sits on the SME Board of Directors.
